2024 Multicultural Children’s Book Day | Kayla: A Modern-Day Princess

Multicultural Children’s Book Day is upon us and I’m so excited to have joined in the fun for the giant book review link up! Today I’m sharing a book from the Super Platinum Sponsor, author DeeDee Cummings of Make a Way Media. Kayla: A Modern-Day Princess – A Little Magic is the story of how you can make your dreams come true when you work towards a plan.

Even from a young age, Kayla always had a plan. However, others didn’t always agree or had their own plans for her. As she blossomed into a young woman who is about to graduate from college, Kayla is excited to share some big news with her family. Her mom assumes Kayla is getting married, but is in for a shock once Kayla gets back home. Kayla’s lifelong dream was to dance on Broadway and it was finally coming to pass! While her mom wasn’t expecting this news, she realizes every gift she’s given Kayla in the past has prepared her for this moment. With gifts representing each important milestone in her life, and reminders of her mother’s love, Kayla is ready to take on New York and live out her dreams! Illustrated by Charlene Mosley, readers will enjoy seeing the water color images dance on each page.

We enjoyed reading A Little Magic from the Kayla series. It’s a reminder that even though our parents may have expectations and goals for how our lives will turn out, it’s important to go after your dreams. This book is recommended for ages 5-9. We were also provided with a copy of Kayla: A Modern-Day Princess – Activity Book. Featuring coloring pages, affirmations, puzzles, bookmarks, and more, this activity book would be perfect for traveling or a rainy day at home. Many thanks to DeeDee for sharing copies with us!

Multicultural Children’s Book Day 2024 (1/25/24) is in its 11th year! Valarie Budayr and Mia Wenjen founded this non-profit children’s literacy initiative; they are two diverse book-loving moms who saw a need to shine the spotlight on all of the multicultural diverse books and authors on the market while also working to get those books into the hands of young readers and educators.

Read Your World’s mission is to raise awareness of the need to include kids’ books celebrating diversity in homes and school bookshelves. Read about our Mission and history HERE.

Thank you for sharing your lovely review of Dee Dee Cummings’ book and for your support of Read Your World Day 2024. I also thought the story was so inspiring and I learned that it’s based on her own daughter, a Broadway actress and dancer!
