Today I’m sharing our last Page 1 Kids subscription box as a brand ambassador. I can’t believe how quickly three months went by! April is National Library Month, so it’s only right that this box was library- themed. The extras included stickers, a DIY bookmark with crayons, and a card catalog insert. Maya was so excited about the stickers after the unboxing, I had to peel them off of her shirt to take the photo above!
The book chosen for us this month was Another by Christian Robinson. A wordless picture book, Another tells the story of a girl who wakes up and follows her cat into an alternate world. They are chasing an identical cat who grabbed a toy mouse from the floor, except this cat has a blue collar. After entering a large hole, the girl and her cat come across lots of diverse children playing different games. Finally, they find the blue-collared cat with a girl who looks identical to the protagonist. Once the toy mouse is returned, the girl and cat journey back home through the hole.
I’m not a huge fan of alternate worlds, but the illustrations in this book really drew me in! I used wordless picture books often during my time as a school-based speech-language pathologist. It was amazing to see how each child would interpret the images, as they told their own versions of the story. Maya noticed different things in the illustrations each time we read it, such as the little girl have Saturn on her nightgown and the galaxy on the end papers. Another is recommended for ages 4-8.
