Maya’s Book Nook was created at the urging of several family members and friends. I’ve always had an affinity for reading. I remember stories from my mother and grandmother of how I would stay up late with a flashlight reading under the covers. Books are a central part of my life, both personally and professionally. As a certified speech-language pathologist, I’ve spent lots of time helping struggling readers. The bulk of my research in my doctoral program, and post-graduation, focuses on understanding and improving the language and literacy needs of African American children and other at-risk children.
Maya’s Book Nook is the merging of my passions: building strong language/literacy foundations and diverse children’s literature. Maya has been surrounded by books, even before she was born. From reading to her every day of my pregnancy, to a children’s book themed baby shower, books have been a natural part of her world. Shortly after having her, I realized how few books I could readily find that featured diverse characters. In 2016, I decided to share books every day of Black History Month that featured diverse characters. After receiving so much positive feedback, we continued sharing books year round.
It is our hope to help other parents, speech-language pathologists, and educators find books that their children can see themselves represented in. We hope to provide you with language and literacy tips to some of our favorite reads to continue promoting strong foundational skills. We’ll also share curated book lists, strategies to use when reading, and other great resources. Thanks for joining us on this journey!

Hello Mrs. Johnson. I just read about you and your daughter’s book club and am very impressed. I am a new author of my first children’s book, “Lee Lee and the Traveling Merry-Go-Round.” This story teaches children to treat others the way they want to be treated, taken from Luke 6:31. I am interested in finding out if my book can be added to your collection in order to give it some exposure. If so, I would love to send you a complimentary copy for you and your daughter to review. Thank you.

I appreciate your possible consideration to add my book to your collection because all children everywhere need to understand that it is God’s desire for everyone to treat others the way they want to be treated.
